Abstract

The purpose of conservation is to increase the life of the objects through time. The contemporary meaning of the conservation includes the examination, restoration and preservation of cultural objects. The conservation is a destructive method and because of that is imperative the need for the multilateraly documentation of selection and conservation works as to exist the possibility to supply information to the future conservators or to others researchers. The wood sculpture has expressed in the Hellenic area by the ecclesiastical wood sculpture and especially by the sculpture of the wooden sculptured iconostasis. The most of those artifacts have monumental size and the examination, the scientific research and the conservation of them, are extremely painful and time-consuming procedures. The object of this thesis is the drawing of an Information System that covers the professional and research needs for today's conservation laboratory and will document multirateraly the wooden sculptured iconostasis. This thesis will cover partly the gap of electronic documentation at research, study and conservation of these objects. With the design of this system we are trying to offer an advance tool in the hands of conservator which will give him the possibility of organized registration and recovery of information, necessary for the syntax of conservation researches, conservation reports, and public or not papers. This thesis includes: Study of evolution of iconostasis in Hellenic area, and also the technology of their construction, the Greek wood sculptors, analysis of requirements and semantic design of the model of our information system, terms glossary, thesaurus with terms relatives to the description, examination and conservation of wood sculpture. The description of our model was created with the language Telos.
