Abstract

The role of Harm Avoidance and Novelty Seeking in cognitive and emotional decision making, personality, memory and executive functions in healthy males Cloninger’s Harm Avoidance (HA) is a well recognized, herritable personality trait, which measures the tendency to anxious avoidance, apprehensive worry, fear/anxiety and social shyness/inhibition. It is a risk factor for anxiety and mood disorders. Cloninger’s Novelty Seeking (NS) is a well recognized, herritable personality trait, which measures the tendency to respond strongly to novelty and cues for reward or relief from punishment, which leads to exploratory activity in pursuit of rewards as well as active avoidance of monotony and punishment. The aim of this study is to examine how HA and NS affect personality, memory and executive function in healthy subjects. This would facilitate conclusions on the pathways to mental illness, assuming the dimensional model of mental illness. HA and NS are opposite personality traits, well founded on animal models. HA is associated with anxiety and fear and NS is associated with their absence. NS can be operationally construed as behavior relatively uninhibited by fear due to reduced fear-processing such that deficient emotional information processing about the potential consequences of “risky” actions, lead to a greater incidence of these behaviors. NS is a risk factor for bipolar disorder and drug abuse.
