Abstract Introduction: Smoking is one of the largest threats to health globally and millions die because of it. Tobacco is responsible for the development and aggravation of cardiovascular disease and cancer among others. The tobacco’s concentration in nicotine causes its dependence from which smokers find it very difficult to escape once addicted. Currently the scientific community is trying to discover more effective ways of helping people to become independent of nicotine. Recently, the medical community and especially pneumonologists have made effort to help people curb this habit by creating smoking cessation clinics. Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of gender, age, socioeconomical status and medical profile of those who had visited the smoking cessation office of the Venizeleio – Pananeio Hospital and the effectiveness of the smoking cessation programe. Methods: Data regarding all visits to the smoking cessation office from January 2004 to March 2007 were accessed and recoded using Microsoft Office Access. The statistical analysis was performed using the statistical package spss 14.0 Results: In total 334 smokers visited the smoking cessation office, with most of the patients male (60.2%) and coming from non health related fields of work. As for their educational status 25,4% were high school graduates and their mean age was 44,5. One in two were lost during the follow up, and the success rate was estimated at 31,7%. During 2004, 146 visits were made, while in 2006 merely 81. Conclusions: A decrease in the number of visits to the smoking cessation office was noticed. While a large number of smokers were lost during follow up, which could be due to the fact that they were not ready to quit or they did not take this attempt seriously enough. The socioeconomical status of the smokers that visited the office could be used so as to see what part of the population is more likely to visit smoking cessation clinics, and therefore should be focused during recruitment.
