Abstract In the present study, we examine the care of abandoned infants in the wider Greek world in the 19th century. Infant abandonment is a phenomenon that has occurred in global history over the centuries. Particularly, during the 19th century there was a widespread practice in Europe, Russia and America. In every society there have been attempts to address this important issue, sometimes successfully, but some other times unsuccessfully. Of particular interest is the19th century for the Greek world, as it was marked by many changes and developments in political level, and problems not only social and financial but also in terms of public health with an apparent lack of organized health system. The care of abandoned infants in the wider Greek world is divided into two systems: the open-care system or family-system, by assigning the infant to a wetnurse, and the institutional care system by establishing Foundlings Homes and other charitable Institutions. There were cases that a combination of the two systems of care was applied. The corresponding facts are simultaneously presented for Europe, Russia and America, in order to give a complete picture of this major social problem.
