Abstract The aim of this work was the immobilization of the bacterium Pseudomonas sp. in a polymer matrix. Entrapment of cells within spheres of Ca2+ alginate is the most widely used technique for immobilizing living cells. This immobilization procedure can be carried out in a single-step process under very mild conditions. A large number of bacteria possess the capability to degrade organic pollutants. Pseudomonads, aerobic gram-negative rods seem to have the highest degradative potential. The most important classes of organic pollutants in the environment are mineral oil constituents and halogenated products of petrochemicals. Therefore, the capacities of aerobic microorganisms are of particular relevance for the biodegradation. Phenol degradation by Pseudomonas strains is generally limited by substrate inhibition and low specific conversion rates. These drawbacks can be at least partly overcome by process intensification through immobilization of microorganisms on solid carriers. Therefore, the biodegradation rate of phenol was investigated, while the bacterium was immobilized in the calcium alginate beads. Subsequently, the life time of immobilized bacteria as well as the release profile of Pseudomonas from alginate beads was determined.
