Abstract The history of human skeletal remains is a valuable source for understanding the history and evolution of diseases as well as the lifestyle of the population. Archaeological excavations brought to light human skeletons that revealed precious information regarding the health status, method of death and methods of treatment that those people received. The science of Paleopathology has a special interest in studying the diseases of the past and provides significant input regarding the natural history and evolution of human diseases, the active or deactivated diseases or for those that have been successfully eliminated throughout the years. Another field of science, known as Paleoradiology, contributes significantly to the interpretation of the macroscopic findings observed to the skeletons. That recent scientific specialty is a combination of classic radiology (plain radiology) and computed tomography (CT). The major benefit is that they provide adequate, high quality images without interfering to the bone itself. Even though a large number of human skeletons has been excavated only a small amount of those has been scrutinised using the CT. The main reason is the high cost of the procedure and the limited accessibility to the scanners. Moreover the skeletons are not fancy findings like the “mummies” that have been examined with CTs and MRIs with great enthusiasm. The present study, aims to delineate the orthopaedic pathology found in the skeletal remains, excavated in the island of Crete. The first one comes from the area of Ag. Fragkiskos, in the city of Rethymnon and the second from the Kastella area, in the modern city of Heraklion. The xrays and the CT’s revealed a significant number of orthopaedic findings. Among these are fractures in different anatomic areas and in various stages of healing, degenerative joint conditions (osteoarthritis of the spine and the major joints) and benign or malignant tumor lesions. The outcome of the study was to gain significant knowledge regarding the daily activities of the community, the inter- and intrapersonal relationship between people of the same or different study groups and the pattern of lifestyle as well as the occupational hazards. Finally, significant observations were made regarding the available methods of treatment and the time and method that their life was ended.
