Abstract |
The objective of the present work is the design of a computer-aided system for the documentation of conservation work on objects that belong to the cultural and natural heritage of the world, using the Entity/ Relationship model. The documntation of the diagnostic examination, of the state of preservation, and of the conservation and restoration interventions is a necessary procedure, which is demanded by modern standards of conservation. The use of a computer-aided system for the documentation of conservation projects helps to improve the organization, standardization, archiving and utilization of the data, and renders the procedure of documentation more effective, and less time consuming. The requirements of the present system were determined through examination of the needs of the prospective users, and from the theoretical study of the object of documentation in the conservation project. The conceptual design of the system supports three main areas of documentation: (a) cataloguing, which includes the necessary handing procedure and other basic information about the natural object; (b) technical examination, which includes information on the construction technology, the material(s), the state of preservation of the object, a list of damages, a comprehensive description of environmental conditions, examination and analysis results, and suggested conservation techniques; (c) conservation, which includes information on remedial and preventive- maintenance conservation actions. The present work also includes the results obtained through a questionnare, which was distributed to art-conservationists, as a first attempt to organize a thesaurus of conservation terminology.
