Alternative Title "Thesaurus Fraudis": Aspects and roles of deception in Apuleius' "Metamorphoses" (MET. 4.23-6.30)
Author Παναγιωτάκης, Στέλιος Ευάγγελος
Abstract The present study deals with the motif of deception in Apuleiuns' novel "Metamorphoses", and focuses upon the central inserted tale of the novel, known as the tale of cupid and Psyche. The aim of my study is to point out the complexity of the relevant material, and to prove thet in spite of its fairy tale character, this particular tale can be treated, just as any other section in the novel, as a valuable source of information for the interpretation of the motif deception. Though a detailed examination of this literary motif in and out of the inserted tale, it is argued that Apuleius employs a wealth of traditional literary material and original ideas to show that deception is a dominant theme in both the tale and tyhe novel. As such, deception features explicitly in the slanders, lies and hypocrisy of the characters and implicitly in the physiognomies of aged and lame people. (abstract truncated)
