Abstract The effect of organic carbon and bromide ions on the formation of disinfection by-products in drinking water was studied. To achieve the objectives of the present thesis, experiments on the formation of disinfection by-products and their occurrence in samples from water treatment plants and distribution systems were performed. Water disinfection was studied under realistic conditions, which contributed to the understanding of the impact of organic and inorganic precursors and their concentrations, of the concentration of the disinfectant and of the reaction time, on the formation and speciation of the most important disinfection by-products detected in drinking water samples. Studies on the quality of natural untreated waters allowed the estimation of the nature of organic matter and the representative range of the concentration of total organic carbon and inorganic ions. The occurrence of disinfection by-products was studied in samples collected at water facilities and urban distribution systems. These studies contributed to the understanding of the presence of disinfection by-products with respect to the initial quality of the untreated water. A strong correlation was established in realtion to the sampling area. It was found that the presence of bromide is the most important contributing factor influencing the occurrence of disinfection by-products in the drinking water of coastal areas. The results of the above studies were also used to establish a new empirical equation for the calculation of total molar concentration of trihalomethanes, suitable for waters with low total organic carbon content and high bromide concentration.
