Abstract |
The objective of this study was to investigate the views of primary school teachers of
public schools in Chania, Crete on school gardens, their potential use in teaching the
different courses of the greek primary school curiculum. and to identify factors that
would encourage or discourage them from starting a school garden. In total 232
teachers (173 women and 59 men) filled the questionnaire.
Here we report some of the findings: teachers in semi-urban schools were more
satisfied by the plants in their school yard, than teachers from urban or rural schools. .
Teachers with 1-10 years of work experience considered the “knowledge and support
and help from their school and social environment”, the most important factor for
starting a school garden. For the female teachers of the sample most important factor
was the availability of equipment and space in the school. With regards to their place
of origin, teachers with a semi- urban background responded more positively
“knowledge on gardeing and support and help from their school and social
environment”. Those with an urban background considered the availability of
equipment and space the most important factor for the creation of a school garden.
Teachers with 11-20 and >21 years of work experience regarded lack of appropriate
space as a barrier. For the majority of the teachers with 1-10 years of service, lack of
will is not an inhibitor. The greatest barrier for the groups with 1-10 and 11-20 years
of experience was the lack of space. Female teachers, considered lack of time, lack of
gardening tools and lack of space together with safety issues and class management
issues indibitory to starting a school garden. . For teachers with an urban origin the
lack of financial incentive along with lack of knowledge on the subject matter, were
considered the top barriers. The implementation of Environmental Education projects
did not seem to affect the answers of teachers concerning the factors that would urge
them to create a garden, nor the factors that would act as barriers. Finally, teachers
with 1-10 years of experience considered school gardens affecting all aspects of a
student’s development, (cognitive, affective, psychomotor).
