Abstract The present thesis examines the views and expectations of parents regarding the social rehabilitation of their children, aged 14-45, with learning disabilities (LD), who live with them and have attended at least one educational or vocational programme in the prefecture of Heraklion, Crete for a minimum of one year. A special reference is made to the needs of this population and the impact that these may have upon the planning and development of the relevant services. Out of the 310 families that met the admission standards, 176 families are participants in the present study. The research method chosen was structured interview. The expectations of the parents appear to be low and have apparently been adapted to the available infrastructures and services that are present within the local community. Although most of the parents admit that work would give meaning to their children’s lives and would relieve and please their families, they do not believe that under the present conditions their child could work in the competitive employment. They consider the principle obstacles to employment to be the high rate of general unemployment, the person’s intellectual disability, the prejudice of potential employers and fears for potential sexual harassment and/or financial exploitation. Nonetheless, if the appropriate structures and services were in place, they believe that their children’s employment would be feasible. Most parents expect and wish that their child continue to live under supervision either in the family home and/or with their siblings or other relatives. They seek greater services not for themselves but for their children, which would focus on activities with their peers, greater opportunities for employment, the financial support of the family and the creation of supported living houses in their local community. The expectations of the parents appear to relate to the demographic characteristics of themselves and their children, their views on education, work and sexuality as well as the available structures, services and available care networks. Creating expectations for the parents could contribute to a demand for a higher quality of life. The present study proposes the creation of services within the community for the families and their young and adult children with LD, the establishment of supported living houses and supported employment programs, the promotion of inclusive education and the establishment of socio-psychological services at all stages within the sectors of education as well as a legal framework which would promote autonomy and inclusion. The adoption of a holistic model of approaching disability, the development of multi-level interdisciplinary and as far as social work is concerned multi-method interventions could greatly contribute to the support and the reinforcement of the families and to the development of autonomy, participation and inclusion for people with LD
