Abstract

The present study aims to examine the measures taken in the Greek state for the confrontation of Malaria in the period 1905-1929, in juxtaposition with the statistical data of the era with regard to the extent of the problem. Objectives of this treatise are the presentation of the demographic facts for malaria in Greece at this specific time, the analysis of socio-economic factors that influenced the fluctuation of morbidity and finally listing the measures that have been taken against the illness as well as evaluating their effectiveness. The period to which this study refers, an era with abundant social, financial, political change and revisions, when the newly founded Greek state had other priorities, particularly interesting is the fact that certain important scientists (Savvas, Kardamatis et al.) decided on their own initiative and fighting a real battle, to implement a health-policy against this disease-pestilence of the epoch, with impressive results. Accordingly the following study provides an analytic description of all the efforts that took place for the confrontation of malaria, beginning from the foundation of "The Union for the Limitation of Malarial Diseases" in 1905. Following the voting of the law on quinine in 1908, as well as the hindrances because of the continuous wars and the complete indifference of the official authorities, until the considerable improvement of the situation after 1923, with the application of new and more effective measures for the confrontation of the disease.
