| Abstract |
A Web Database Gateway (WDG) is a middleware allowing the cooperation between the World Wide Web and database systems. A WDG may be generic, allowing access from the World Wide Web to different and heterogeneous database systems or it may be specific allowing access to a given database system. This thesis deals with the development of a gateway between the Semantic Index System and the World Wide Web. This tool allows the navigation and presentation in HTML of any database which is based on the data model of the knowledge representation language Telos. We have defined a presentation model in order to specify the HTML presentation of objects. This model is a part of the database and is applicable to every database object independently from its classification level. The model separates the semantic, physical and logical structure of the presentation. Furthermore, different presentation views can be defined over the same data. The presentation model provides the application programmer with the means to prescribe the presentation of an object or a set of objects in a declarative way. The gateway uses the information from the presentation model and produces the final HTML page. The tool has been tested in several SIS applications producing satisfactory results.
