Abstract The use of natural water in industrial water systems causes problems to the function of such systems, namely CaCO3 salt deposision, contamination by microorganisms and the corrosion of metal surfaces. Phosphonic acids and, in particular, hydroxyphosphonoacetic acid (HPAA),concerning the present study, are used as corrosion and salt formation inhibitors in industrial systems. This study describes the synthesis of metal-phosphonocarboxylate polymers that HPAA forms with alkaline earth metals (Mg2+, Ca2+, Sr2+, Ba2+), as well as with Cu2+, Zn2+, Cd2+, at a metal/HPAA proportion of 1/1, under pH conditions of between 2 and 3.1. There follows a description of the chemical characterization of the {Sr[(HPAA)(H2O)3]•H2O}n, {Sr[(HPAA)(H2O)2]}n, {Ba[(HPAA)(H2O)2]}n, {Cu[(HPAA)(H2O)2]•H2O}n polymers as well as that of {Cu[(HPAA)]}n polymer, which was the result of chemical processing of {Cu[(HPAA)(H2O)2]•H2O}n. This characterization was achieved through the use of X-Ray crystallography, ATRIR spectroscopy as well as elementary analysis. Finally, a study is presented of the anti-corrosion capability of the complexes that are formed in the presence of HPAA and Sr2+, Ba2+ ions under pH=2 (under which the synthesis of the respective polymers was achieved), as well as under a pH=7.3, within the limits of that of industrial water systems.
