Abstract In recent years, the World Wide Web offers a very efficient and effective medium for providing information, which is exploited in many everyday activities. Therefore, it is necessary to provide new ways to present information supporting users in accessing the content of their interest through easy search mechanisms. Specifically, information about assistive technologies for disabled people present on the web is limited and often inadequate. Search and presentation applications currently available are mainly based on difficult search mechanisms, and the provided information is not always reliable. In this dissertation, the design and implementation of a search and information representation application, called Technology Showcase, is presented, that aims to provide users with information on available assistive technology products and services, along with best practice examples of their usage. The user center design method was followed in the design of the Technology Showcase application. This method involves the active participation of users during the entire design phase. In this manner, a comprehensible collection of requirements is possible in order to determine the application functionality and the type of information provided. Furthermore, design guidelines as well as Universal Design guidelines have been followed in order to achieve higher usability and accessibility of the application. The Visual Studio .NET 2003 platform has been used to implement the Technology Showcase. This platform includes tools that enable the development of completely independent and extensible applications, thus making Technology Showcase application flexible. Finally, usability evaluation of user interaction was performed by end users. The usability metrics utilized are effectiveness, efficiency and satisfaction. The analysis of the results indicated that the application satisfies the initial usability objectives.
