Abstract The excitation of Rydberg series of autoionizing (AI) states by intense laser fields is studied. The approach is based on a semiclassical formalism for the time development of the probability amplitudes of the atomic states under the influence of the field. The atomic parameters are calculated using the Multi-Channel Quantum Defect Theory (MQDT). As an application we calculated total ion yield and photoelectron energy spectrum for the exatation of the 4dnp 1P10 series from the ground state of Sr atom.
