Abstract Network monitoring started since the beginning of networks and continues until today. Its purpose is to define all the elements that form a network (computers, users, applications etc) and the deep understanding of their relationships. Since networks are becoming more and more complex and fast, network monitoring should be able to answer more and more complicated and in some cases newly born questions. The purpose of X-Packet is to approach network monitoring with a different view. This is mainly achieved throught two basic characteristics. The first characteristic is that all users (with special privilages or not) of a network can monitor its traffic using the same source. Users with no special privilages can monitor the traffic that is generated or designated to them. The second characteristic is that all users can determine the characteristics of the traffic they want to monitor in a dynamic way. X-Packet is based on the client-server model. Server accepts requests from users and in parallel gathers network traffic. Periodically, server sends the results of the monitoring procedure to its client. A graphical representation approach is used for presenting the results, for example the rate at which packets are transferred. X-Packet is a tool that is designed to efficiently monitor networks. Its purpose is the direct extraction of results in the network monitoring activity.
