Abstract In the present work, four methyl-aza-macrocyclic ion indicators, containong substitutd coumarins as chromophores, were synthesized. In the first two structures the 1-aza-15-crown moiety is incorporated as ionophore, while the other two contain the 1,4,8,11-Tetraazacyclotetradecane (cyclam) moiety. The latter products were isolated as mixtures of mono- and di-substituted cyclam, with the di-substituted congener in excess, given that the compounds could not be separated by conventional chromatographic methods. Preliminary luorescence studies were carried out with the 1-aza-15-crown-5-type indicators and standard solutions of Zn2+ and Cd2+. Both compounds responded to increases of ion concetrations exhibiting changes in their fluorescence spectra. The dissociation constants of one indicator were calculated as Kd=8.7 μM for Zn2+ and Kd=16nM for Cd2+ ions. The above values indicate that the above mentioned indicators could be used as ion probes for the selective detection of Zn2+ and Cd2+ ions.
