Abstract |
Carbonyl compounds are the first stable oxidation products of hydrocarbons in the atmosphere. The photooxidation of carbonyl compounds is a major source of atmospheric free radicals. The influence of carbonyl compounds on tropospheric ozone and peroxyacylnitrate ( PAN) production, which affect both human health and plant growth, is well known.
In this study we present an analytical technique for determination of formaldehyde and other carbonyls in the atmosphere. In this method air is drawn through a prepacked silica gel filter coated with 2,4 dinitrophenylhydrazine (DNPH) and phosphoric acid as stabilizer. A stable hydrazone is then formed, which is desorbed with acetonitrile and analysed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with ultraviolet detector (UV).
During this work several tests have been performed using various columns and the best conditions to achieve separation between the studied carbonyls are presented. In addition stability of samples and standards, reproducibility of the analysis and detection limit of the technique are also presented.
