Abstract In this master's thesis we study the possible symmetry breaking solutions(SSB) of an effective Lorentz invariant action consisting of a complex scalar field coupled to a U(1) gauge field and check whether there are reliable solutions that realize the spontaneous breaking of Lorentz invariance. We find a total of two families of SSB solutions. One is the standard SSB of the U(1) gauge symmetry. The novel, second class of SSB solutions we study is the one associated with the breaking of the Lorentz symmetry of the action. We show that such solutions always occur in a regime where the scalar fluctuations are very strongly coupled and the effective action description is not reliable. We conclude that no spontaneous Lorentz symmetry breaking can occur in this context at weak (effective) coupling.
