Abstract It is generally accepted that policing substantially influences the everyday life of citizens. Police work inevitably involves officers interacting and communicating with people, which in turn entails that problems are sometimes occurring because officers are often poorly prepared for solving problems the public is facing. If police is to effectively deal with crime, then a certain level of successful communication and co-operation between the police and the community is to be expected. There is evidence to suggest that the police training does not successfully prep are cadets for the respective roles they would assume in interacting and communi cating with the public. The teaching and training methods employed are not reali stic, on the one hand failing to comply with the social and political changes of our times and on the other with the latest developments in education, psycholog y, sociology and other disciplines bearing on police training. Communication skills constitute a crucial component of police work as they are h eavily involved in successful witness interviewing, which leads to the establish ment of a positive climate between the police and the public. New information te chnology opens up new possibilities for training in realistic witness interviewi ng. An interactive multimedia program aimed at providing training in crime witne ss interviewing was the focus of the present study. Sixty two first year constab le cadets participated in the experiment. Results indicated that: a) the program had a positive effect on the development of witness interviewing skills; b) tea cher and student roles were substantially differentiated compared to conventiona l instruction; and c) cadets~R attitudes towards the new means of instruction we re very positive. The implications of the present study are discussed in terms of possible applica tions of new information technology within the context of police training and of its effectiveness with other specific police training issues.
