Abstract Metamaterials MMs are a relatively new technology which is very promising because is can provide properties that may not be found in nature. One of the most famous application of metamaterials are the Gradient Index GRIN lenses, i.e. lenses with on-constant refractive index. The topic of this thesis is a GRIN lens, specifically the Luneburg lens. In this work is studied analytically with Lagrangian Optics method as well as computationally with FDTD and Hamiltonian ray-tracing methods the propagation of light through a single Luneburg lens. In addition we study the propagation of EM waves in some networks of lenses and obtain both analytical and numerical results. Furthermore we propose some interesting arrangements with their eventual applications. Specifically in this thesis is indicated that it is feasible to be fabricated waveguides and cloaking devices with Luneburg lenses networks. Finally lenses are located randomly and we observe some extreme events, probably Freak Waves, and caustics areas.
