Abstract |
Aim:The present study is aim in to evaluate the prevalence of obesity and hypertension in a rural population of Crete. An additional aim of the study was to investigate the relationship of obesity and blood pressurethe diary intake, smoking habbits, alcohol consumption and type of occupation (greenhouse farmers, the non greenhouse farmers and seperds). Methods:The study sample consisted of 505 men and women, aged 18-75 years old, (223 men and 282 women) and the response rate was 84.3%. The sample was selected from 24 villages, which belonged to six different municipalities of south Heraklion (Messara region). Results:The antropometric measurement indicated that 87% (p=0,0001) of all individuals were both overweight and obese, while only 13% were found on the normal level (BMI>25). Mens BMI had a mean of 29.3 kg/m2 while the corresponding mean for women was 30,6kg/m2 [p<0,001]. An increased systolic pressure >130mmHg was demonstrated by 34,7% of men and 38,1% of women [p=0,458]. A statistically significant difference was found between mens and womens diastolic pressure [p=0,004], with men reaching 35.2% and women 23.1%. Smoking among men was 48% and among women 13%. Farmers in greenhouse were havier smokrse in comparison to seperds and farmers in open cultivations. Conclusions:The study demonstrated one of overweight and rates in comparision to populations other studiesin Greece, which is accompanied by a high prevelance of hypertetion.
