Abstract

OBJECTIVES: Tο study the anxiety disorders and the depression among members of the Open Care Centre for the Elderly (KAPI), in correlation with their participation levels in the KAPI. METHOD: The study was followed cross-sectional design and 132 elderly (age ≥65) participated. All participants were members of the Open Care Centre for the Elderly (KAPI), from a rural district of Heraklion Prefecture. Data were collected with face-to-face interviews. Social activity and levels of participation in KAPI were examined. The Short Anxiety Screening Test (SAST) questionnaire was used to assess anxiety disorders and the Geriatric Depression Scale 15-question (GDS-15) was used to assess depression in participants. RESULTS: The final sample consisted of 132 elderly people members of KAPI (age ≥65 and mean age 75.7 years). 18,2% of them had minor depression (GDS≥7) and 8,3% moderate to severe depression (GDS≥11). We found that the increasing age, the female gender and the absence or the minimal participation in KAPI were associated with higher risk of depression. Low levels of participation in KAPI and female gender were associated with higher risk of anxiety disorders. CONCLUSIONS: The high level of depression and anxiety disorders seems to isolate the members in their environment with result a limited social activity and participation in KAPI. These findings affect more women and those who were in widowhood.
