Abstract Bioinorganic chemistry is a relatively new branch of chemistry with intense scientific interest. It involves the design, synthesis and study of metal complexes that are structural or functional models of metalloenzymes. Many inorganic compounds and elements have been found to play important roles in biology. For example, manganese ions has been found in hydrolytic and redox metalloenzymes in the form of mononuclear, dinuclear, or polynuclear centers. The aim of this work was the synthesis and characterization of divalent dinuclear Mn centers with structural, spectroscopical and/or functional similarity to the active center of arginase. The active center of arginase contains an asymmetrically coordinated dinuclear MnΙΙ complex and is responsible for the hydrolysis of arginine to produce ornithine and urea in the final step of the urea cycle.
