Abstract |
Background: The purpose of this dissertation is to analyse the
pharmacoepidemiological data in the Health Center of Anogia, as well as to
compare the results with those of a previous study that had been carried out
in the same center. The results of these two studies were important in
revealing the exact health problems in the area. A comparison was made with
previous studies which investigated the use of medication in the field of
primary care. Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed in a sample
of 6250 prescriptions which were randomly selected from a data base of 12500
prescriptions. A classification of the medication into 30 different drug
categories was performed, according to their use. Furthermore, the average
drug use per prescription, as well as the percentage use of insurance funds
was estimated. The percentage of prescriptions that came from the health
center and those that came from the village medical offices were also
calculated and the distribution of the medication through a twelve month
period was observed. Results: The three most frequently prescribed drug
categories were: heart system medication with 1982 medicaments (18%),
antibiotics with 1318 (12%) and pain killers with 947 drugs (8,6%). OGA
(79,4%) and IKA (13,94%) were the insurance organisations with the highest
financial participation. Out of the examined prescriptions, 2996 were found
with one medicament (46, 8%), 1922 were found with two medicaments
(30,7%) and 1088 were found with three medicaments (17,4%). 59,97% of the
prescriptions came from the health center, whereas approximately 39,5%
came from the village medical offices. Conclusions: The findings of the
retrospective analysis are similar to those of the perspective one and seem to
identify the prevalence of the illness in the area. The comparison with other
studies that have been carried out abroad reveled both differences and
similarities in the area of primary care, therefore the need for further research
is identified.
