Abstract

Problems associated with wastewater utilization in today’s societies demand rational wastewater treatment and reuse. For this reason International Organizations impose strict quality standards for the wastewater treatment processes to protect against harmful effects on the environment and the public health, as well as to increase water resources. Since, wastewater contains significant quantities of dangerous contaminants (pollutants), this dissertation attempts to provide basic principles of wastewater management related to the wastewater treatment and reuse under greater safety. In the specific dissertation is examined the Wastewater Treatment Plant of Hersonisos firstly because of the tertiary wastewater treatment process that is used and secondly because of the implemented wastewater reuse systems. In order to evaluate the tertiary treatment process of Hersonisos, took part specific measurements to identify the main factors of organic load contained in wastewater. The results of these measurements got analysed and compared with the measurements of the secondary wastewater treatment process of Iraklion. Finally, alternative processes of wastewater treatment are proposed for the Plant of Hersonisos.
