Abstract |
As Internet traffic grows explosively, providers are looking for technologies in order to alleviate congestion and maintain a cost-effective network. Recent advances in optical technologies are extremely promising and seem to be able to accommodate the providers? expectations. Among the most important technological advances in optical networking is the multiplexing of several hundreds of wavelengths within a single fiber (Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing-DWDM) and the development of a new breed of Optical Cross-Connects (OXCs), which are able to switch wavelengths in the optical domain and to establish optical paths through signalling and not in a manual way, as was traditionally done. These OXCs make use of the MPLS traffic engineering control plane, according to the recently proposed MPLambdaS approach, which is a subset of the Generalized MPLS approach. One of the important issues in such networks is the efficient capacity allocation. We propose a method for routing wavelengths in the optical network using lexicographic optimization. Its goal is to balance the load of the network so as the network to be able to accommodate more optical paths. We also propose a framework for deploying lexicographic optimization in operational networks. We built a simulator and we conducted experiments which show that the proposed method is much more effective than shortest path and shortest cost.
