Abstract Εffective procedures for performance analysis and pricing are important for controlling the use and dimensioning of broadband networks.The objective of this dissertatio n is to apply and evaluate large deviation techniques for performance analysis and traffic engineering,to investigate usage based pricing schemes for network transport services with open loop congestion cont rol,and to investigate pricing and resource sharing for Available Bi t Rate (ABR) services, which support closed loop congestion control. We show for real broadband traffic that the recently developed theory of effective bandwidths,where the effective bandwidth depends on the links operating point through two parameters the space and time pa rameters,can accurately quantify resource usage. For ATM links with a small buffer,in addition to giving the correct expression of the overf low probability,we give a new qualitative expression of how overflow occurs. We investigate usage-based-pricing schemes that are based on bands of the effective bandwidth,compare them in terms of fairness,a nd investigate their incentive compatibility.
