Abstract On the threshold of the second decade of the 21st century, a vast amount of information emerges, concerning new epidemiological, immunological, immunogenetic, genetic, pathophysiological, diagnostic, neuroimaging and therapeutic data for multiple sclerosis (MS). Now more than ever, the imperative of interdisciplinary communication, information sharing and collaboration among neuroscientists, of both basic and applied/clinical research, are of great importance. Moreover, various bioethical questions arise, firstly as for the proper information of patients and their relationship principally with their doctors but also with health professionals that contribute to the management of the disease (nurses, physiotherapists, psychologists, etc) and secondly around the promising biomedical research in the field of stem cells and their potential in vivo application in MS patients. Therefore, following the theoretical approach of the subject on its medical-empirical dimension and the necessary historical overview of the disease, the main objective of this study on the one hand is to investigate the very special, sensitive and complex doctor-patient relationship in this multifactorial disease which has intense social dimensions, by examining the two dominant schools on the procedure of diagnosis: the Kantian school and the Consequentialist school. On the other hand, this study, aims to verify the perspectives outlined by new therapeutic trials and the illusory optimism often cultivated in patients, their relatives and other people who are involved, by premature announcements (made by the media, companies, researchers etc) on stem cell therapies.
