Abstract Two dimensional (2D) ultrathin materials, in recent years have attracted great scientific interest because of their remarkable properties. 2D Transition metals dichalcogenides (TMDs) are materials that belong to the family of 2D. Specifically, in this thesis we study the TMDs molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), which can easily be mechanically exfoliated by bulk to a single layer because of weak Van der Waals forces between layers. Monolayer compared with bulk exhibit great optical and electronic properties make it very desirable for various optoelectronic and photonic applications. The purpose of this work is to study the photochemical doping technique of mechanically exfoliated monolayer MoS2 using a pulsed UV laser. The sample is irradiated by laser in chlorine and nitrogen environment. Because doping affects carrier’ densities and excitonic properties, with this technique we are trying to tune the band gap of the material, making it even more valuable for a variety of new applications. Raman and photoluminescence spectroscopy help us to understand the effect of photochemical doping of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) because both exhibited remarkable spectra changes after doping.
