Abstract |
The role of disinfection in potable water production is widely known since the early 1900’s, when the application of chlorine started in drinking water. Water disinfection via chlorination
was directly associated with the drastic reduction of the number of deaths from typhoid fever and cholera in the beginning of the 20th century.
In the course of time other kinds of disinfectants have been used alternatively to chlorine, such as ozone, chlorine dioxide etc. At the same time there has been an effort to comprehend
the way these substances react in water solutions. In 1974 Rook and Bellar released two separate scientific researches concerning the formation of THMs species -which are regarded
highly toxic- in chlorinated waters.
Ever since numerous scientific essays have been released concerning the analytical detection methods of these compounds as well as the DBPs reaction kinetics formation via chlorination and ozonation.
Subsequently to this research many researchers have developed models in order to predict the formation of disinfection by-products (especially THMs). There are over 118 such equations in bibliography – mainly regarding the assessment of THMs, HAAs and bromate ions
formation.
An evaluation of selected predictive models for the formation of THMs and bromate in water is carried out in this essay. Furthermore, a case study is conducted in order to assess via
predictive models the formation of THMs and bromate in pre-ozonated and post-chlorinated water. Additionally, WatPro software (Hydromantis Inc) for THMs analysis is used for the
simulation.
