Abstract Introduction: Despite of the major importance of morbidity for health planning and resource allocation, there are no recent estimates of the morbidity from neoplasms at a Greek level. Those data that are available generally refer to the mid-1990s. The aim of this study was to present epidemiological results relating to malignant neoplasms on the prefecture of Rethymnon, Crete, 1999-2004. using primary data from Cancer Registry of Crete. Methods: The registration of neoplasms was population based on the prefecture of Rethymnon. The data were collected from General Hospital of Rethymnon. Then, the diagnosis coded through the international classification of diseases, 9th edition and entered in the data of Cancer Registry of Crete. Furthermore, crude and standardised incidence ratios were calculated for 5 years period. The patients was residents of Rethymnon and was diagnosed during 1999-2004. Results: The number of new cases for both sexes was 747. The most common diagnosed malignant neoplasms are lung 106 cases, prostates 100 cases, colorectal 98 cases, bladder 87 cases and breast cancers 72 cases. The crude and the age Public Health & Health Care Management Faculty of Medicine – University of Crete IX standardized incidence rates are bigger for men. Further, with the as larger is the age, so the incidence becomes higher. Conclusion: The standardized incidence rate on rethymnon is similar than the estimated for the whole Greece.
