Abstract |
World Health Day 2004 is dedicated to the theme of road safety. The slogan Road Safety is No Accident draws attention to the fact that road injuries can be prevented if governments, the health sector and others take action. From the Greeks side, government focused on the problem and developed the program Kathodon 2001- 2005». The aim of this study was to measure the prevalence of traffic accidents and the evaluation of risk factors related to them. The research took place in the Heraklion District, during the six month period from April to September 2004. 1446 traffic injury victims admitted in either of the two general hospitals of the Heraklion District and 656 traffic accident victims were recorded at the Medical Emergency Transportation Network. Young people from 10 to 30 years old and the motor riders seem to be the most vulnerable road users. Persons who travel at the national roads have a greater risk for a severe or fatal accident. Results showed that 17 of the 24 fatal accidents happened in the national roads. The highest incidence was observed during Saturday, Sunday and local holidays. High incidence is also observed at noontime. Despite the intervention programs and although fatal accidents seem to be in decrease, the incidence of serious accidents in the region studied is high. Aiming at reduction of accidents in the specific area priority should be given at appropriate prevention strategies, evaluation of the intervention programs and the implementation of surveillance system for traffic accidents.
