Abstract

A significant number of studies have shown that the school environment plays a key role in attitudes that students will develop regarding different cultural groups. More specifically, in recent years research on developmental psychology has documented the benefits accruing from the school interaction, to the decrease of prejudices. These studies conclude that intergroup contact is necessary in order to decrease prejudices and stereotypes. Within this context we conducted research aiming to explore the effect of school promiscuity to the change o perceptions and attitudes regarding Roma population.Our goal was to ascertain whether and to what degree has the contact between students and teachers with students of Roma origin at the school area contributed to the weakening of the racial prejudice and the mitigation of the negative stereotypes that exist regarding this social group. Population references of the research were 37 teachers and 81 students of three Primary Schools in the broader region of the town of Chania. The methodological tool used was the questionnaire, through which the quantitative and qualitative data were utilized. The questionnaire was mostly structured with closed-end questions as well as a limited number of open questions. The input of data into a statistical program followed, with the help of which took place the processing to extract the results. Through the responses of the research subjects the diversification of their perceptions regarding the social group being examined is revealed. Further on, the data are being presented and analyzed, whereas at the end of the research an attempt to interpret these data is being made and the concerns are being cited for further investigation.
