Abstract Malaria is a disease that has plagued Greece since ancient times. It is an infectious disease caused by the parasite Plasmodium spp. and is transmitted to humans primarily through the bite of Anopheles mosquitoes. Remarkable is considered the outbreak of the disease held in Greece in the 20th century and the response measures taken to eradicate the disease from the country. Although Greece have received the certification <<free of malaria≥≥ since 1975, outbreaks of the disease are still recorded in the country as well as worldwide. Thus, malaria constitutes a major public health problem , which until today concerns the global scientific community.
