Abstract INTRODUCTION - AIM :A growing interest on the use of traditional (indigenous) healing practices has been observed during the past few decades. The literature reports that 31% -70% of world population use traditional medical practices and healing techniques in meeting its primary health needs. Chronic Diseases of Respiratory Disorders have been reported as one of the main causes in using Traditional Healing (T.H.). This subject is still neglected in Greece. The aim of this study is the investigation of the knowledge and the use of traditional health system with relevance to respiratory disorders, in Crete. POPULATION – METHOD: The study included 3 phases. Initially, a systematic review of the current literature with the aim to identify the most frequently reported healing practices, was conducted. Then ethnographic interviews (n = 6) in Spili and Archanes investigated actions undertaken by local traditional healers. Afterwards48 inhabitants of Archanes Municipality with a diagnosis of COPD and Asthma (N=48) were interviewed with the aim to explore available knowledge, attitudes and practices in regards to the use of Indigenous System. A questionnaire with 64 items serves this purpose. RESULTS: The systematic review contributed to the composition a list of 174 practices. 78% pf practices (n=135) were well-known and 34% (60) were in use for the past 3 years. The prevalence of used traditional remedies was 97,4 % (n=47). Traditional remedies were given frequently under the form of a medical herb tea (62,1% of a total) and common cold or flu (72,3%) and sorethroat (43%) were included among the predominal indicators. The knowledge and the usage of healing practices positively associated (p <5%). The main cause of utilization was the symptoms relief but the main reason of not usage was the severity of illness. DISCUSSION – CONCLUSIONS: There are some indicators that the Indigenous Knowledge System and traditional Healing Practices are still in the use in contemporary Crete, but it is quickly disappearing and it is being replaced by the Western one.
