Abstract The subject of the present master thesis is the pulsed laser assisted photochemical modification of graphene oxide. In particular the suitable conditions to realize efficient reduction of graphene oxide in solution or in the form of thin films via excimer laser irradiation in Helium atmosphere are investigated. A parametric study is performed through variation of laser fluence, number of pulses and graphene oxide solvent. In all cases the reduction process is monitored using Raman, UV-VIS, FTIR and XPS spectroscopies. We also report a first attempt of functionalization and doping of graphene oxide sheets through pulsed UV laser irradiation in the presence of liquid precursor molecules and gas dopant media (Cl2 and NH3) respectively. Finally we demonstrate the implementation of our technique in organic photovoltaic (OPV) and field effect transistor (FET) applications. In the introduction section, the properties of graphene and graphene oxide are summarized. We emphasize on the composition and structure of graphene and the most important preparation methods of graphene oxide. In chapter 2 the spectroscopic methods we used were described in detail. Chapter 3 reports on the state of the art of the laser assisted reduction of GO as well as the potential application of this technique in OPV cells and GO FETs. The first part of chapter 4 presents our simple reduction technique based on pulsed UV laser irradiation of GO in liquid media. Results on different fluences, three different laser pulse durations and two different solvents are presented and compared. The technique is additionally applied to GO thin films, while its effect on the electrical performance of GO FETs is demonstrated. The second part is referred in the pulse laser assisted photochemical functionalization of GO and its application in OPV solar cells. In the third part we report preliminary results of Cl and N doping of GO thin films and its effect on the electrical performance of GO FETs. In chapter 5 we discussed the results of the experiments we carried out and their impact on various applications. We conclude by a brief introduction into the future prospects of the new technique developed.
