Abstract Introduction. Involvement of respiratory therapists in Intensive Care Units (ICUs) adds to the outcome of critically ill patients. Respiratory therapist’s specialty is common in USA yet in Europe physiotherapists are involved in both respiratory care and mobilization of ICU patients. The role of physiotherapists in Greek ICUs has not been studied and data concerning Greek physiotherapists working in ICU are scarce. Aim. To determine the professional role of physiotherapists in general, adult ICUs of general, state, hospital in Attica and Crete. Methodology. 136 out of 236 physiotherapists working in 22 hospitals were included in the study. Study sample consists of physiotherapists involved in general ICUs of general public hospitals of Crete and Attica and have more than 2 years of experience in the ICU. A questionnaire was given directly to the physiotherapists involved. Results. The response rate of our study was 79%. 4 ICUs were university ones. Mean number of ICU beds was 11. 82% of the hospitals had 1-2 physiotherapists available in the ICU during mornings but 36% during both mornings and afternoons. In the weekends, there is usually one physiotherapy shift in 63,6% of the hospitals. There is no physiotherapist available after-hours. Only 15% of the physiotherapists (in 50% of the hospitals) were dedicated in ICU. Physiotherapists’ participation in continuous education and clinical investigation is low. In most hospitals, physiotherapists perform both respiratory therapy and mobilization but they are rarely involved in duties concerning mechanical ventilation (invasive and non-invasive). There were apparent differences in clinical practice and beliefs among physiotherapists dedicated in ICU and those involved only periodically. Dedicated physiotherapists are involved more often in specialized duties such as non invasive mechanical ventilation (x12=15,85 p<0,001), intubation (x12=6,57 p=0,01), adjusting initial ventilatory parameters (x12=3,64 p=0,056), liberation from mechanical ventilation (x12=9,25 p=0,002) and extubation (x12=8,03 p=0,005). They also show grater scores of autonomy and evidence based knowledge in ICU matters. Conclusion. Greek physiotherapists are involved both in the respiratory care and mobilization of ICU patients. Yet dedicated physiotherapists are more involved in duties improving the outcome of ICU patients. Since the number of Greek dedicated ICU physiotherapists is very low, it should be improved for the best of ICU patients.
