Abstract Aim of this research was to study the gene of glutamate dehydrogenase in Drosophila Melanogaster andthe involvement of the enzyme in the regulation of glutamate neuromuscular transmitter pools at the synapsis. The genetic locus was cloned and charactrized. The Drosophila gene is unique and encodes for two alternative spliced messages differing in the presence of absence of an exon. The fluctuation of th level of the two messages during the embyogenesis suggests possible tissue of functional differentiation between them. The pattern of expression of the protein at the embyonic somatic musculature and the nerve cord enhaces the possibility tha the enzyme is involved in the regulation of the transmitter glutamata pools.
