Abstract The objective of this dissertation is the study of the photocatalytic activity of zinc oxide thin films Zn1-xAlxO (x=0, 1, 3, 5 % w/w) deposited by the sol-gel and ultrasonic spray pyrolysis techniques with respect to the photodegradation of stearic acid. These are innovative, inexpensive and environmental-friendly chemical techniques for the production of metal oxide thin films in an industrial scale, while providing at the same time the possibility of large-area depositions. The structural, morphological and optical properties of the Zn1-xAlxO samples were investigated together with their photocatalytic activity under UV-A light (365nm) illumination. Moreover, the photocatalytic activity dependence on growth parameters such as deposition temperature and time, precursor solution, distance between nozzle and substrate and Al-doping concentration is thoroughly examined. Depending on deposition parameters and technique applied, the Zn1-xAlxO samples show different thickness, crystallinity, morphology and optical properties, and thus exhibit diverse photocatalytic activity concerning the photodegradation of stearic acid. It is concluded that Zn1-xAlxO thin films deposited via chemical routes onto glass substrates under mild conditions show quite encouraging results concerning the photocatalytic degradation of stearic acid under UV-A light exposure, and could be thus considered as strong candidates for application in photocatalytic windows.
