Abstract Colorectal cancer is a disease in which the normal intestinal epithelium turns into cancerous epithelium. It is considered the second leading cause of cancer death in men and women, the third most common malignancy in men after prostate and lung cancer and the second most common in women after breast cancer. An increase in new cases is expected in the coming years. The need to manage the impending situation is therefore apparent, as malignant neoplasms of the colon appear to be a serious public health problem. The best way to avoid this is to prevent it. The prevention of colorectal cancer is divided into primary prevention and secondary prevention. Secondary prevention focuses on early detection of precancerous conditions and early diagnosis of cancer in order to treat it immediately, through screening with colonoscopy as the most common diagnostic tool. The Local Health Units (L.H.U) are groups of health professionals that provide Primary Health Care Services. Their goal is to provide holistic and quality anthropocentric health care. An integral part of their responsibilities is the prevention of disease and the promotion of public health, as well as the provision of services related to public health. Based on the above, the specific research was presented and carried out, which presents the effectiveness of the screening for colon cancer in L.H.U of Rethymnon. The results showed the diversity of the composition of the predetermined reference population of a Το.Μ.Υ. Colonoscopy as a screening method din not seem to be an option for regular screening of Rethymnon residents, although the frequency was higher than in the rest of the Greece .The referral rates from the GP and Nurse were satisfactory with small rates of colonoscopy after the referral, but a sufficient number of scheduled screening tests in the future. Screening for breast or prostate cancer is high and has been shown to have a positive effect on the choice of colonoscopy. Collecting data and drawing conclusions from a structure with a predetermined reference population could be the impetus for reviewing the existing policy strategy for colorectal cancer screening. In conjunction with the reform of the health education system for a more effective approach of people by health professionals, the belief and culture of the society about the necessity of preventive control will be strengthened. A total of 452 people were selected, by systematic sampling with a search of the health life of the specific structure.
