Alternative Title Teacher attitudes and habits towards health education in secondary schools

Abstract The relationship between education and health is one of mutual contribution. School possesses an important role in solving health problems faced by community. Teachers are commissioned with a double role, this of the educator and that of the carrier of health related behaviours and health attitudes, either alone and with personal initiative or through organised health education programmes. The objective of the present study is to investigate the voluntary contribution of secondary school teachers in promoting health-related behaviours to students, acting as models for them, without any typical obligation or any additional payment. Interest was focused especially on the religious lifestyle of the teachers as it has been showed that religiousness plays an important role in adapting health attitudes. The research has taken place during three months at the beginning of the 2004-2005 year school. The initial sample of 299 teachers (13,4% of total), selected by cluster random sampling, are teachers of secondary education with permanent position, at all school types of any level in Heraklion county. The final sample consisted of 202 teachers (23 subjects were excluded and the participation rate was 73,2%). The monitoring instrument used is a self-completed validated questionnaire composed of five sections. The results suggest that the teachers’ score in the scale of religiousness (range from 0 to 9) had a mean of 4,3. Thirty-nine per cent of the respondents were smokers, whereas 74,7% used to consume low alcohol beverages and 32% high alcohol beverages. Almost half of the teachers reported no physical activity at all. Only 25% of the participants adopted healthy nutrition. Three out of ten mentioned participation in any Health Promoting seminar and six out of ten have read any Health Promotion manual during the last three years. A rate of 82,5% of the teachers agree that their time is limited to involve in health promoting procedures. In conclusion, it could be said that the adoption of the religious lifestyle by the teachers, the teachers’ social and educational profile, as well as some of their health-related behaviours, such as dietary habits, smoking and physical activity, could be used as prognostic factors of the educators’ voluntary teaching of health education patterns at school.
