Abstract The North East Aegean Sea is of particular ecological importance within the eastern Mediterranean due to the entrance of the less saline modified Black Sea water in the eastern part through Dardanelles strait and the observed high productivity. The aim of the present study is to investigate the temporal (winter- spring) and spatial variability of metazooplankton abundance and biomass in Northeast Aegean Sea, by applying methods which give better approximation of the entire metazooplankton. For this purpose, three nets with different mesh size (45, 200, 500 μm) were used, an approach applied for the first in the Εastern Mediterranean Sea. The estimation of abundance and biomass was done by semi-automated image analysis and a size spectra method was applied to combine the results of the three nets. Sampling was performed almost monthly in the December-May period at three stations with increasing distance from the entry point of Black Sea water. Micrometazooplankton (collected by the 45 μm meshed net) contributed highly to total metazooplankton abundance, which peaked in December at the station closest to Dardanelles strait and in April or May at the other stations. The most important fraction of metazooplankton biomass was the mesometazooplankton (200 μm meshed net) and its maxima values observed in April or May at all stations, determined the peaks of total metazooplankton. Though the abundance of the makrometazooplankters was low, they contributed significantly to biomass, represented mostly by euphausiid and decapod larvae, few large copepod species, as well as by carnivorous organisms. Abundance and biomass minima of all metazooplankton fractions were detected in March. Copepods dominated both in terms of biomass and abundance for all size fractions, while nauplii highly contributed to the abundance of micrometazooplankton.
