Abstract Adaptive optics is a technology by which a wavefront aberration in an optical system can be modified. This technology, although relatively recent in the field of vision, is being used in the field of astrophysics for years, in order to improve images taken by telescopes. The use of these optics may provide the possibility of improvement of the wavefront which results in the retina and thus the image being perceived. The aim of this thesis is to develop an adaptive optics setup for applications in visual psychophysics. This included the development of the system as well as pilot experiments validate its operation. However, in addition to recording and correcting aberrations with this particular system, it may also be possible to introduce additional and / or different aberrations. This feature allows for the study of the effects of visual eye aberrations on visual function. This system includes an adaptive mirror and a Shack-Hartman wavefront sensor. The device has the capability to measure the aberrations of the wavefront of the eye, and to fix it in real time in closed loop mode. This device can find applications in the study of refractive media that cause wavefront deformation when passing through the eye. In essence, it is a means of calculating the aberrations that will occur in the eye when the wavefront passage is through the cornea and the lens. For the creation of this system, used an SLD infrared (superluminant diode) at 750nm ± 20nm (EXALOS) as a light source, a deformable mirror (Imagine-optic Mirao 52Ε), and a Hartmann–Shack sensor (Imagine-optic HASO 4 ). The light, with the help of a beam splitter, enters the eye and focuses onto the smallest possible spot in the retina. The reflected light (for the most part from the pigment epithelia) comes out of the eye, then through a telescope it ends up at the deformable mirror, and from there with the help of a second telescope is directed to the sensor. With this system, the pupil plane of mirror and sensor will be conjugate. This thesis pertains to the development of the optical system, the calibration, the adjustment and pilot operation of the device in a closed loop. In the first application, the insertion of suitable aberrations will be tested, in order to increase the focal depth. This is a common practice in the field of multifocal lenses, as well as intraocular lenses, for the treatment of presbyopia. The device that was developed, allows the virtual insertion of aberrations (via the mirror), in order to test different aberration profiles, where they may be more efficient from the spherical aberration or the pupil separation in concentric zones with different refraction
