Abstract |
Purpose:
To investigate the diagnostic value of the visual electrophysiological
tests (Visual Evoked Potentials and Electoretinogram) in glaucoma and to
correlate them with findings from scanning laser polarimetry (GDx-Vcc)
Methods:
39 individuals participated in the study, who were classified in three
groups, according to the criteria of the ocular hypertension treatment study:
12 controls, 18 glaucoma suspects(GS), and 9 early manifest glaucoma
(EMG).
The subjects were monocularly examined by simultaneous recording of
pattern electroretinograms (PERGs) and visual evoked potentials (VEPs)
using checkerboard stimuli, reversing at a rate of sixteen reversals per
second. The single check was subtending 48 and 480 arc minutes. The
luminance of the screen was 40 cd/m2, while the stimulus contrast was 100%.
Analysis was performed on an average of 40 sweeps, each having an epoch
of 4 sec.
Main outcome measures were the amplitude of the response
(calculated as the amplitude of the spectrum following fourrier analysis) for the
48 arcmin check size and the ratio of the amplitudes of responses for the 48
and 480 arcmin.
22 of the above individuals were tested with scanning laser polarimetry
(GDx-Vcc) and the index NFI was used for the statistical analysis.
Results:
VEPs: the FFT amplitude for the 48 check size did not show any
difference between the patient groups. The amplitude ratio 48/480 showed
statistically significant differences between the control group and the GS
(p=0,001) group and also the EMG group (p=0,017).
ERGs: the FFT amplitude for 48 check size showed difference between
the control group and the EMG group (p=0,034). The amplitude ratio 48/480
showed statistically significant difference between the control group the GS
group (p<0,001) and the EMG group (p<0,001). Moreover, the specific index
showed statistically significant difference between the GS group and the EMG
group (p=0,046).
No correlations between NFI values (from GDx) and pattern VEP-ERG
parameters were found.
Conclusions:
The amplitude ratio (48/480) of the pattern-ERG was found the most
reliable measure, since presented mionimal variance and showed statistically
significant differences between all three groups of the study.
No correlations between NFI values (from GDx) and pattern VEP-ERG
parameters were found, probably due to the small (inefficient) number of the
individuals tested with GDx-Vcc.
