Abstract People with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are characterized by skills deficits that limit their social interaction and communication. However, due to their excellent visual memory, they better understand, assimilate and retain information using virtual aids. Research has shown that there are effective interventions to address social communication deficits. However, combining these interventions with emerging assistive technologies, such as virtual and augmented reality, is a field that has not been explored. The purpose of the present research is to explore the views of parents on the use of virtual and augmented reality in the development of social skills in children, adolescents and adults with ASD. For the data collection, the tools of qualitative research were used, and more specifically, the semi-structured interviews (live and telephone) and the avalanche sampling. A total of 19 parents of people with ASD aged 5 to 24, living in Crete, participated in the research. The results showed that people with ASD have a particular penchant for Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and use them for both recreational and educational purposes. 17 out of 19 parents, although using traditional methods for educating their children, were receptive to the possibility of an alternative therapeutic intervention using ICT. The interviews of the parents showed that they are very cautious and even negative in the use of virtual reality in the education of their children, in contrast to the augmented reality, which they would enthusiastically adopt, as through it they consider that the daily needs of people with ASD are covered. (self-service), and their socio-emotional needs as well. The present study highlights the need for parents of people with ASD to create a personalized augmented reality application, which is expected to help increase the social communication interventions currently provided by educators and therapists to people with ASD.
