Abstract The Master’ s thesis discusses the concept of media literacy. It presents the theoretical approaches that have been developed with respect to media literacy and watch the meaning recast of media literacy until today's digital age. It notes down the European standard for media literacy through the study of the relevant community texts and try to give through the study of relevant actions, the Greek approach to media literacy and its relevance to the European aspect. Media literacy is a very usual issue nowadays, in the digital age of the 21st century, not only in the debate on children education, but also οn adult education. In the early 20th century, the era of the classical media, media literacy adopted a protective approach and imposed strict, protective rules and supervision measures to children. As time went by, a lot of factors made media inevitable and needed in people's lives. So media literacy entered a new phase, and emphasized on systematic analysis forms that reveal the hidden ideologies of media and lead to the release of their influence. Thus, media literacy is interested in a critical approach of the media and their contents and adopts the model of the informed-critical consumer / citizen. In the information society of the 21st century, with the rapid development of new, digital media and information technologies and the convergence of technology with information technology, media literacy is redefined. Acquires both an instrumental orientation, linked to the labor market and a creative character to realize the potential of new media and the other constitutes the means for balancing dipole opportunities - risks online. European policy, with some delay, adopt and incorporate into regulatory texts changes taking place in media literacy. After texts with exclusively protective substance, over time produced texts that focus on the development of critical attitude towards the media. In today's digital age, we find texts that suggest both the instrumental and creative use of media and also retain the maximum development of new media’ s opportunities, with special emphasis on safety online. Media literacy is considered the mean of safe online development for children. Our country, as member of EU, seems follow European policy about media literacy and recently Greek educational policies are approaching them more and more. However, in Greece media literacy movement does’ t follow the usual development. In recent years we find relevant actions and programs, that adopt the critical and creative model. Rather limited we could describe the development of media literacy in Greece and without specific and comprehensive policy.
