Abstract This thesis is the result of the postgraduate research about the connection and interaction of New Technologies and the possibilities they offer to the cognitive process of the reading comprehension skill of the narrative text. The main goal was initially to create interactive teaching materials for reading comprehension of narrative texts and then to design, implement and evaluate an intervention program by making use of this digital material on cognitive and metacognitive level on 4th grade students with learning disabilities. This is accomplished by incorporating the basic common theoretical principles of socio-cognitive and socio-cultural approaches. More specifically, the intervention program was designed and implemented and its effects were investigated by providing visual-verbal and socio-procedural facilitations within a suitable and supportive teaching and learning environment on 4th grade students with learning disabilities, aiming particularly on: 1) improving student’s reading comprehension of narrative texts, 2a) acquiring metacognitive knowledge on reading comprehension of narrative texts and 2b) acquiring metacognitive strategies concerning the reading comprehension of narrative texts. To conduct the research and achieve the research goal an interactive learning material with the title “Little Nicholas reads fairy tales”, was designed and implemented according to specific digital hardware design principles. The aim was to incorporate this e-learning material as a cognitive tool in teaching narrative text comprehension integrated into the concept of Blended Learning and the possibilities of Distance Learning. The research was conducted during the months of May and June of 2018-2019 school year, at an elementary school in the urban area of Rethymno, Crete, Greece. The interactive learning material was applied to two fourth-grade students with learning disabilities in real teaching conditions. The method used in the present project was the qualitative approach and it constitutes a case-study with elements of action research. The results of the research showed a significant effect of the teaching intervention program by providing visual-verbal and socio-procedural facilitations for the cognitive and metacognitive knowledge and skills of students-readers through the use of computer as a cognitive tool.
