Abstract The process of anaerobic digestion is frequently used for treatment of wastes with high organic load and for biogas production. The maximization of the biogas production rate, for energy purposes, has occupied the scientific community because of the sensitivity of the process to changes (such as a shift in the organic load), which can lead to process failure. The present study was carried out under the program of postgraduate studies "Science and environmental engineering". The experiments took place at the laboratory of "Biochemical engineering and environmental technology" of the Department of Chemical Engineering University of Patras from the April of 2007 until the December of the same year. The dynamic behavior of a continuously stirred tank reactor (CSTR) for biogas production under anaerobic conditions was studied. In particular, the aim of this thesis was to study, under a sequence of HRTs (hydraulic retention times), the HRT that the system can operate at maximum biogas production conditions and reach steady-state. A synthetic medium that consisted mainly of glucose was pumped to the reactor. The system was subjected to stepwise type erturbations, where the HRT shifted, was kept stable until steady-state was reached and the next perturbation followed. Before the experiments start, the HRT was at 26 days and was altered four times, until it reached 3 days. The experimental results showed that almost every shift of the HRT led the system to a new steady-state and higher biogas production rate, except for the last one that overloaded the system leading to washout of the methanogenic microorganisms. Finally, a simplified model was used for the description of the process. The model parameters were estimated from the steady-state data.
